It’s surreal this moment is here. For the last two years, I’ve been preparing for this moment of leaving Louisiana and finally starting a new life. When I moved out my parents’ house, I got my peace. With leaving this state, I’m living my life again with new environments, people, cultures, and places to go have fun. I’ve been a hermit with just working and passing by old school buildings and seeing classmates which I’m ready to move on from those bad memories.

I am happy here and I want to spend years here. YEARS plural. How many years? Not sure, but years. I want to find a doctor I like and a therapist and psychiatrist I like. I want to buy and own a house. I want to garden more this Spring/Summer. Swim more, camp more, bike more. See more plays. Concerts. All the things in Rochester. Build friendships with people I can actually see in person and talk to in person and do things with. Collect books.

I’m surrounded by women undertaking the same journey, many of which have their mothers. I’ve attempted to keep my breathing even at gender reveals as I listen to other women discuss their joy that they can have their mother and partner in the delivery room. I’ve smiled and congratulated them as their mother’s toasted their new grandchild. I’ve sobbed on the car ride home feeling jealous and broken. I should be grateful for all that I have. I’m so lucky and yet it doesn’t fill that hole she left. Every new piece of information we share with family never elicits her reaction and I yearn for it more than the twenty others I received.
