    It did not always used to be this way. In fact, there is a whole story behind how working out became one of my favorite hobbies. Like many people, I played a sport for most of my childhood before eventually going to college. My sport of choice — although, is it really a choice if your parents made you play it? — was soccer. I had an incredible experience playing, with amazing teammates, travel, lifelong memories, and a personal journey that helped shape me into who I am today.

    The rainforest is where I wanted to live

    By day I helped the researchers collect bugs.. mostly katydids. It was entomologists from the Smithsonian, and the trip was through Earthwatch. In my free time, I wandered the rainforest. It was stunningly beautiful, and everywhere I looked life grew on life, various layers creating the ecosystem that so entranced me. At night I was filled with an exquisite happiness. I was content.. and rocking in a hammock outside, listening to all the sounds of the forest at night made me feel I belonged there. The local Indians I met were curious and friendly, and at one research station they made this music with primitive instruments that only added to my contentment. I loved everything about it. There are a million things in the rainforest that can hurt you, and I knew that, but I learned quickly what to avoid. The browns and greens of the rainforest are accented by brilliant reds, blues, yellows.. poison dart frogs, sap from the Dragon’s Blood tree, a caterpillar advertising that it was [poisonous] to touch. I fell in love with it.

    I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t traveled and seen the incredible things that I’ve seen! So what if I’m carrying a bit more student loan debt because of study abroad? Who cares that I’m not living with my boyfriend at the moment? I knew that travel would alter my life’s course, and that’s fine. Why do I care what others around me (family, “friends”…) think?!?!

    In our minds, you buy an RV to explore the great outdoors, not to sit in front of the giant flat-screen tv in your semi-truck size RV that cost more than my house. We could only conclude that this was to satisfy the wives of the men who dreamt of traveling the country in an RV. However, at the RV show, we did take a quick look inside a truck camper and thought, “Hmm, roomier than I would have guessed.” We came home and immersed ourselves in more research. Thanks to the great land of information that is the internet we stumbled upon Four Wheel Camper. A truck camper that’s built for off-roading! Better yet, a dealer had just opened up shop in Denver, we were there within a few days.

    We have no travel plans at this time. The van is doing well, but has remained parked since our last trip to Texas to visit Melissa’s family. The only change is that we upgraded my DVD player to a Blu-Ray player, unlocking access to Melissa’s vast movie collection inside the van. We were on a bit of a disaster movie kick, but then the storms that brought tornadoes closer than we wanted slowed that down a bit.

    I want to encourage desire and longing and dreaming, but I also know our budget. I know the call laid upon our lives that constrains us to particular places and people when wanderlust would drag us away. I am growing in having realistic expectations on what we will and won’t be able to pull off this side of glory.

    I’m here to tell you, there are a lot of reasons. One of the simplest reasons is that I adore adventure. I’ve always enjoyed traveling. “Not all those who wander are lost.” I realized a few years ago that I’ve lived on 3 different continents and that I had traveled to 4 at the time. Now, it’s 5. When I had that realization, I gave myself a goal to visit every continent before I’m 30, because reaching every country even within a lifetime (like I would like to do) seems a little unattainable when you don’t have a remote job or a job related to traveling. I started looking into traveling to Antarctica and learned two things: 1) it’s super expensive (it’s a minimum of $10,000 to get out there) and 2) it’s really bad for the environment. The amount of resources wasted for 3 days on the southernmost continent is just not justifiable for personal pleasure. Then I learned about the opportunity to work out there. I have been applying over the past couple of years and finally got the offer. Right now feels like the perfect time to go, since my current stage of life makes it a little easier to pursue an extended trip away from “normal” life. I know things like having a house, being an aunt/mom, owning pets, etc would make a job like this hard to leave for, so I’m really glad I was able to get this role when I did.

    I am a planner. I want to see as much as humanly possible. I have but three weeks of vacation a year. I wish I could be more chill (in all aspects of life hehe), but time is of the essence and I wanna see sh*t 🤷🏽‍♀️
