I wanted them to love their own bodies and appreciate all the beauty in others. I’m talking about their bodies not just for what they look like, but for what they can do. I am not telling them that they cannot wear certain clothes even if they are not flattering. Because I’ve read all the stuff that says it’s not what we say as mothers but what we do, I also vowed never to denigrate my body in front of them, not even mics – assaults like mumbling an outfit makes me look fat, or that I “really shouldn’t be eating anything”.

I think we live in a world where no matter how connected we are, through social media, we all still feel alone. Most of us will not admit it. We feel alone even if we have a million followers, or we have a booked-up schedule with events and parties. Even when we have a family, friends, partners, kids, life is lonely. At the end of the day the only person inside your head is you. I cannot cure loneness but if I could help one person feel less alone than they did before that is more than I could asked for. As kid I was always told every feeling I had was wrong. Every thing I thought was wrong. The way the I looked, dressed, everything about me was wrong. I never wanted anyone to feel that way about themselves. Constantly trying to change everything about yourself to fit in. To be looked at as normal. I learned over the years that, that is not normal. I believe in letting my kids be who they are even if it’s not something I understand.

My writing has given me clarity about what I want to do next. I will be starting an online degree in psychology next year with a long-term view of changing careers. I also have an idea for a number of books I plan to write.

This kind of lifestyle never really died out for me until my first year in college. In my head, I still thought that to be attractive to girls, you had to have a lot of money and spoil them. I thought that in order to be academically successful, you needed the best computer, the most expensive education. My parents hammered over and over again into my brain that in order to become successful, you had to be rich. It was all about the money.

Now that I think about it, I really don’t remember when was the last time I had a hearty laugh. I envy you sometimes because you used to laugh for anything and nothing but still it used to be very genuine one. Laughing is the best medicine, now I understand why you used to be so healthy and now look at me, I seem like a shop of issues.

What I treasure most in our family is the special bond they shared rooted in their belief in God and love for family. Ours is not a perfect family, we have our own ups and downs but the bond we shared provided a sense of continuity that I want my children to experience as well.

To be able to feel and show compassion to those who are marginalised in our society by whatever means and help those within my generation and beyond to see past outdated institutional beliefs. I want to one day be able to experience that warm feeling you get when you see communities coming together, and not when something disastrous happens, but in our everyday lives. The kind of feeling you feel when a little child hugs your legs because they are so full of love for everyone. We adults could learn so much from children if we give them more of a voice.
