I did not expect sharing my trauma story with strangers to be a foundational aspect of my adult life. Especially while entering the mental health profession. I feel like most therapists do not go there on a public level to maintain a sense of professionalism, but, fuck it.

You see, I come from a career in employment and housing support. I have worked with societies most vulnerable and I specialised in helping people with mental health issues, long term health conditions and disabilities. I’ve walked with clients to food banks, I’ve talked them down from depressive periods and I’ve been that only person they feel able to open up to. It was actually doing this I realised there is always a need of support but not always the right people available – you have to remember an employment advisor taking a client to the food bank is 100% out with their job remit. But we do it, because helping people isn’t a straight forward path.

I worked my way through graduate school, taught in the inner city for seven consecutive years, paid my own bills (car payment, car insurance, utilities, rent, etc.). I wrote and recorded my own folk album, and I had at least three romantic relationships. I proposed to a man I loved and was rejected by him and my best friend, I was accused of intentionally deceiving and “stealing” a man because he was interested in me and not my friend; again, I was rejected. My family was both antagonistic and unsupportive of me. Still I “warrior-ed” on. I did not need the approval of these people to be the person I WANT TO BE. I let it go.

I have been a student at Noroff before and I got to learn quite alot about website development (Front-End). This was a very challenging but interesting journey that I went through and I do not regret any of it! I learned quite alot and I was able to understand what is behind the websites that we see almost every day. The reason to why I chose Graphic Design through Noroff is because I know that I was satisfied with the course I took earlier and Noroff teaches relevant stuff for their students. I was introduced to Noroff through an education exhibition when I was looking for places to study after I graduated.

When my dad and I used to go for coffee and long conversation, he impressed upon me the importance of being a good listener. He told me to always make eye contact, let them know you are listening by nodding your head, asking questions when the narrative was unclear or a term unfamiliar. He said one of the essential parts of being a good listener is that for however long that person is speaking, it is all about them.

I would like to get to a place where I can take criticism without getting defensive and acknowledging that everyone has their own opinions. It is crucial within design to be able to grow from criticism, not every potential employer will like your work, not every client will understand your creative vision but that is ok. If I can work on honing my skills to the best of my ability, learning from criticism and creating work that I am proud of then I hope everything else will follow in time.

Wants
