The most difficult thing was communicating with my friends and understanding what they were saying but after staying for a while I understood the American culture and was in love with how they did everything. Years ago, I had a client who came up with a personal mantra that made me smile. He had spent years telling himself he was ugly. This incredibly insecure and self-deprecating young man decided that, when exercising, he would chant “I am hot, I know it. I’m sexy and I show it.” He chanted the rhyme to me in my office. I loved it then and I love it now.

I was lucky enough to go to a high school where you could choose psychology as an option. A lot of the other students chose it because they thought it would be an easy class but oh no not me. While everyone else was talking about whatever teenagers talk about (I swear I was born 80 telling kids to get off my lawn) I was bothering the teacher for more work to do. My apologise to the teacher for being an almighty nag.

What did I want to do that made me want freedom so much?

I want to be free to feel life fully. To experience the highs and the lows, to ride them, to express the bubbling excitement and creativity that I am made of. I want to connect and exchange. I want to contribute, and be supported. I want to experience the mighty anger, and the goofy joy. I want to be clever and to be stupid. I want to make love and to make art. I want to surrender to the universe, and be totally immersed in the transformative power of life. I want to feel my heart bursting in the cracking open of its armour; to live in its overflowing juices, infusing every cell of my body. I want to radiate through every atom of my life, and say, I am alive!

I want to go back to not overthinking about the technicalities and letting myself go from time to time and not giving a damn whether it looks “good” or not

It could have been because I was too focused on improving technically that being super experimental was a no-no because I wanted my stuff to look “decent” in regards to following the general rules of art and letting loose; not caring about colour compatibility and linework was like..breaking the rules and not “improving”..sigh
