This not knowing of what I want to do in the future has led me to make more goals within the jobs and companies which I hold compared to full career aspirations for example, moving from team member to team leader in my retail position. Currently I work at a call centre for a major drinks provider where I am involved in the complaints side customers when they have issues with our poducts, machines and deliveries however im already looking upward to moving into a sales representative position.

Maybe I’ll find love along the way but the future is incredibly uncertain and my career path doesn’t really lend itself to stability where there’s always another voice that can be used or an imitator. Maybe that’s me though, in a cutthroat business such as acting I have to take opportunities.

A lot of the narratives that influence us online or in more conventional media are based on these stories of people who always knew what they wanted to do and proved to everyone that they were exceptional at it. Writers who always wanted to be writers, musicians that sold everything to pursue their dream since they couldn’t do anything else or people that created IT companies that turned into millions when they were teenagers. I mean, the pressure is huge! Unconsciously, the following question starts growing inside our brains: “why don’t I know what I want to be?”

Initially, I wanted to begin homeschooling when my kids were in middle school. I wanted to spend those three very critical years of their development with them and I’m also a career lady—so this idea worked to my advantage. I couldn’t give up my career—it was not for the income or the accolades, it is a serious part of who I am. I thrive off of the mental stimulation and the professional challenges. You can throw me to the wolves, and I promise, I’ll return leading the pack—and I will enjoy every turn. You couldn’t take that away from me.

So I’m glad in a way that while it’s quite a hard decision to make because I feel I’m letting go of another opportunity that could have been, it’s also a lesson and a reminder that while there are opportunities everywhere, not every opportunity is right for me.

I’m finding that I’m in a relatively privileged position to have gone through ethical training as regards Library and Information Science — and I can use these skills in ways other than being, “a Librarian.” In addition to being able to see things from an Economic or Business perspective, I also have some clue about the impact of the very same policies on society. For instance, I find that there is very likely a desperate need right now not only for literacy in reading and writing, but also — maybe more intensely — a need for media literacy; that is, an understanding by the polity as to how organizations can manipulate them through the juxtaposition of different media: words, sound, still image, and video or moving image, not to mention the endorsement of their “friends” (i.e. the business leverage of their emotional relationships). How does someone get training in this? Media Studies? Studies of the propaganda that led up the Holocaust?
