I felt that the only way I could truly help this population was by getting that piece of paper. So, I applied for graduate school! Some may say this is a bit extreme. Yet, let’s be honest, the world is more likely to listen to those with education, experience, and acronyms behind their name. Would you visit someone who just called themselves a therapist but had no credentials?

I knew school was primarily going to be paid for using loans or any financial aid I might be provided. There was only one school remotely near my hometown that I would go to if I was accepted, otherwise I wanted to go somewhere in the country that would push me outside my comfort zone. I wanted a larger school than my undergraduate institution that still had a relatively small cohort size. In addition, I was seeking a program with enough clinical and practical experience opportunities that would prepare me to enter the field. I was interested in research, however it was not a make or break for me if the school had adequate clinical/observation experiences.

I just want to give a glimpse into the craziness that IS teaching

If we want public schooling to be an option for generations to come, then we need to start treating teachers as if they’re actually valued. Teachers need higher pay. They need better security to keep them and their students safe. They need parents to work with them instead of criticizing their every move. Teachers need parents to teach their kids to be respectful and work with them when they aren’t. And for God’s sake, stop thinking PTA lunches and pizza parties are the band-aid that’s going to keep teachers in schools.
