I don’t know how to start, and I don’t know what topic to use for the book, or even in what style to write the book (well, books, really). And I realize that needn’t matter. I’m still not writing a book, though. Let alone books.

The thought process behind these silent retreats that I attend was started by St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuit order of Catholic priests 500 years ago. He called this process the “Spiritual Exercises”, that is, taking the time to “examine” your life, and asking yourself the questions you know you should be thinking about:

I have so many cute conversations with these little people in my house. I want some sort of record. I also assume that our out-of-town family, which is everyone except for Uncle Jason, will want to see our kids and read up on what we are doing. So, here I am blogging and hoping it won’t take up too much of my time. Just in this time I am sitting here, I realize the house is a little too quiet. … better go see what these kids are up to.

A little over one year ago, my world was rocked – I was incredibly depressed and felt as if I had no reason to live. That started a trek of finding out who I really am. A few things – for me personally, I find great joy in helping other people. I am a server; I gain fulfillment in helping and in solving problems/finding solutions. I like being a part of something. A year ago, I was in a position of questioning all that I had leaned on — and found that it was built on sand. It was like the tide came in, took the sand, and my little beach house of 23 years caved in.

And what if I enjoy being inside my head most of the time? I like it there. Yes, sometimes I wish I could express myself more openly, but I also know not everyone needs to hear everything I have to say. I save my words for people who truly listen, and with them, I have endless things to talk about. It took me time to realise this, and I’m still learning to get over the fact that maybe I am not boring. I just don’t open up everywhere. I talk a lot, just not in every room. And if being quiet in larger groups makes me seem boring, then maybe that’s okay. Because most of the time, my silence is a choice. So if you ever find me zoning out or going quiet in a group, just know I’m okay. I might be listening, or I might just be lost in my own thoughts. Even in the future, I might feel FOMO sometimes, but I’m sure I’ll be okay. I’ve lived most of my life like this, and I’ve learned to find comfort in it.

I guess for me you can’t just say I love you and it be that simple. I need snuggles in bed, snuggles on the couch, to be wrapped in his arms, for him to hold my hand when we’re walking down the street, to have our arms interlinked in the movies, our feet touching under the table, a good night kiss and goodbye kiss when he goes to work and a hug when he comes home from work. I sound needy don’t I? I told you, I’m a Koala disguised as a human. But after all that neediness I am still very much a strong independent woman who likes to branch out on her own and who can cope when he’s not here. I don’t need him to be here and to be in my life

I admire people who always have positive outlook at life. It is not easy to be positive in this situation we are all in right now, but still I know people, especially women, who keep the positivity and still have faith that everything will be alright.
