I admit that when my kids were in school, and even when I taught school, I really didn’t pay a lick of attention to what curriculum they/we used. I honestly didn’t care because I knew I would make do with what I was given and add to it if necessary. However, according to blogs, Facebook message boards and the YouTubes, curriculum is an exciting, even controversial topic among homeschoolers. Who knew? When there aren’t any powers-that-be handing you your books or sending you to teacher trainings, you can choose whatever you want — Free? Paid for? Common Core? Traditional? Freestyle? Religious? Secular? Direct instruction? Independent learning? Student directed? Teacher directed? Online? Book only? No textbooks? No curriculum at all? There are a LOT of choices … a lot of products … and even more opinions.

When I turn thirteen, I go to public high school. I am asked to write and write and write and I can’t. I have a word in my head. I know the color but not the shape, the taste but not the texture. I try to write it out. One, two, three spellings erased. I pick a different word that doesn’t mean quite the same thing, but that I know how to spell.

Initially, I wanted to begin homeschooling when my kids were in middle school. I wanted to spend those three very critical years of their development with them and I’m also a career lady—so this idea worked to my advantage. I couldn’t give up my career—it was not for the income or the accolades, it is a serious part of who I am. I thrive off of the mental stimulation and the professional challenges. You can throw me to the wolves, and I promise, I’ll return leading the pack—and I will enjoy every turn. You couldn’t take that away from me.

My 11-year-old daughter is learning to be independent on her studies. It is actually a work in progress because she knew that I am her facilitator and maybe she is thinking that there will be some considerations. However, I am strict on disciplining her in terms of studying and time management. It’s rewarding also to see improvements on how she handles her deadlines, activities and projects.
