I had been in band since I was in sixth grade, and it’s what I chose. This was the first push. The vice-principal said, “You can’t have high school band. You have to have been in band throughout school, you can’t just enter band.” That was a big moment for me – it’s the moment I realized I was insignificant. Our vice-principal was the type of person who knew all – everyone, and everything they were doing. She could pinpoint what people were going to choose before they chose it. But for me? She didn’t even realize I was in the band. Every Friday night football games, I was in the bleachers – she never noticed. No one ever noticed.

It feels easier to not talk to people anymore but I am aware of why. It’s because I want deep relationships with others. I hate small talk and I hate it when I can sense that someone isn’t being their true self with me. Specifically, I hate it when I can tell someone is purposely not sharing their true feelings with me because they don’t trust me. I want friends who trust me like I trust them – openly and completely. I’ve always been someone who isn’t afraid to love and trust with my whole heart. Because of this, I’ve been repeatedly hurt by many past friendships. I also never plan on putting my guard up. It feels wrong to me to not love others with all my heart for the sake of fear (and I’m not afraid to be myself in front of others at all). When others put their guard up with me, I feel instantly detached from them. I don’t want friendships that don’t give the same love and trust I’m willing to give. I don’t want incomplete friendships. I want to receive exactly what I give.

Then it suddenly hit me, and the realizations came pouring in. It was not anything else or some kind of mysterious force out there in the universe that was stopping me from writing; it was myself. Along the way, I created this absurd standard that filtered the way I write–or should write, in this case. I forced myself to believe that thoughts, emotions, and opinions had to meet some sort of standard of validity before they deserved to be put into words. It made me think that each word must be worthy of its existence. Because of that, I have hesitated to write anything that would eventually reflect what I truly felt. This is probably why I was so afraid of writing something so pure, raw, and genuine, not because it merely expresses my pain, but because it immortalizes the pain. It makes it more of a reality to confront, it makes it undeniable, and leaves a mark etched in a place where my fingers can trace.
