So I cringe when I hear “You are lucky he is so hand’s on”, no the expectation is that we are both hand’s on. These aren’t my children, or his children, they are OUR children. My husband is not some fabled mythical creature who is rare to non-existent. He is my PARTNER. We are partners. Everything he does, I’ll do. Everything I do, he’ll do. We have a few things that filter more one-sided based on talent or preference, but there is no “women’s work” or “men’s work” in our household. To those who say, “I’m lucky he’s hand’s on”, I say “There’s no luck involved. I chose him and he chose me and we choose this every day.” There’s give and take in every relationship and Hubby and I decided at the beginning of this thing: that we are partners. So until the partnership is ended, there is no luck, only try.

Needless to say, getting used to being the “dutiful” wife has been an adjustment. And maybe I am having a harder time with it because I still have yet to move into the world of an army base where this is just every day life. I am sure that I will be so grateful and relieved when I actually do move for this support network to be in place. And what I am saying may sound like I am unhappy with this group, which is not the case. I do appreciate being kept in the loop since Tom’s world is about to be turned upside down. And these women know the best way to be of support not only to our partners but also to each other. I am just not used to my husband defining who I am, and this is a huge adjustment for me to make. I mean my life’s work is all about respecting everyone’s individuality and being your own person. So when I hear these messages from the Army like “Oh your wife could move here with you to work at the pool” you can see how there could be some frustration and some “You don’t know me!” attitude going through my head.

I’ll get quality bitches by curating my social circle. They will put me in touch with the bitches. My halo effect and social media will be the funnel that makes them fall head over heels in love with me.

We need respect and support for the job that we do as housewife, mother, domestic slave. It takes a lot of courage to give up a regular job and rely solely on another person for your home and board. It also takes the patience of a saint to raise children and teach them decent values and morals so that they grow up to be well-adjusted members of society. These are our future carers, providers and pioneers. Why should we damage them at a young age because we are coerced into accepting thankless jobs in faceless corporations? We should not.
