I had been in band since I was in sixth grade, and it’s what I chose. This was the first push. The vice-principal said, “You can’t have high school band. You have to have been in band throughout school, you can’t just enter band.” That was a big moment for me – it’s the moment I realized I was insignificant. Our vice-principal was the type of person who knew all – everyone, and everything they were doing. She could pinpoint what people were going to choose before they chose it. But for me? She didn’t even realize I was in the band. Every Friday night football games, I was in the bleachers – she never noticed. No one ever noticed.
