When I have the choice of a hundred other words with which I could express myself, why would I want to use words that sound bombastic but mean anything but what I am trying to express??

The Oxford English dictionary is an amazing compilation of words, words and more words! New words have been accepted and made their debut into this ‘word bible’ of a book ever so often ! A word-lovers delight, a writers euphoria, a teachers fallback, it is a magical , mystical mumbo-jumbo of utterances made up of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections !!

      I replied to Mallika @ her blog — here’s a copy:

      Hi Mallika 🙂

I quoted your post — and WordPress normally creates a “pingback” link (I think that’s what it’s called) when one blog post cites another blog post.

I appreciate what you wrote, and that’s why I quoted it.

Language is a fascinating phenomenon — and dictionaries do play an important role. Note, however, that usually people who work with languages (like myself 😉 ), consider dectionaries to be *descriptive* rather than *presecriptive* — which means they attempt to describe the natural language that exists in the natural world; in other words, they do *not* prescribe what is or isn’t language.

Thank you for your excellent writing!

As a little “nitpicking” tip, note that “Oxford English Dictionary” is the full title of the dictionary you referenced (so “Dictionary” ought to be capitalized also 😉 ).

      🙂 Norbert
