My journey into academia was accidental. I’ve always been an introverted nerd who loved studying and struggled in every other work setting, but somehow decided journalism and then PR were for me, got burnt out and depressed (also following an abusive relationship) and thought studying was a way to buy time as I figured myself out. At some point during that studying, I realised research could be my actual job, which doesn’t feel real to this day. In parallel to that, right when I started studying again and went back into academia for my MA in criminology, I took up pole dancing. I was still figuring myself out professionally, so I didn’t really worry about the publicness of pole and of my moderate but nonetheless existing social media profile, also because it did not cross my naive mind that people would discriminate against me just for showing my body (I knew jack shit about sex work stigma then).

The ones who are scrapped up, bloody, tired, frustrated, getting dirty and dusty and spending their dime and their time making their dreams COME TRUE… and loving every minute of it. The people who have the guts to act and change their lives. Those are the people who are shouting at you from the plastic lawn chairs…’You can do it’ or ‘Go for it’ or ‘Woo Hoo’…and the ones you hear through muffled water, shouting, and cheering and whooping it up while you are gasping to get back to the surface. They are the ones who know how you feel when you face the fear, adversity, challenges, indecision, insecurity and again the fear. They are the true compadres of life, and if you don’t have a group of friends, family,, supporters like that then find them. Work hard to develop that group and cherish every hour you get spend in their presence.

In part, this blogpost is some sort of catharsis; a justification to myself that it’s okay I didn’t move to Berlin in 2020, regardless of how many people I told about my plan or how much I wanted it. But moreso, it’s a championing of letting life do its thing. An oddly fitting side note to the Berlin saga is that I went to four broken photo booths in one day before finally finding one where I could get new passport pictures. The lord works in mysterious ways. When the tech company I was working for ran out of money and fired 300+ people at the start of April, I was on the cusp of a promotion (the latest juicy carrot I’d created for my donkeylike self to trod towards), so it was a pretty rubbish letdown. But, no pickaxes this time. I choose to be of the mindset that it wasn’t meant to be.

Invariably during my runs, especially on those long and tedious runs, I discover inspirations from my adrenaline pumped body, environment, or running partners. These inspirations are what I called my Buddha moments. I suppose I could have called them the Eureka moments. But since most of these inspirations are of a spiritual nature, the Buddha won.
